Recovery is not just about enjoying periods of reduced distress – it involves changing the very things that cause distress. And while some proximal causes may be able to be tackled, the “causes of the causes” of distress (e.g. economic inequality, the discrimination embedded throughout society) are impossible for individuals to change alone, requiring as they do large-scale social movements.
The impact of stigma on recovery, in terms of internalised negative attitudes towards mental health problems, is well documented. What is highlighted here is that people experience multiple forms of assault against their identity through various negative representations of social identity. Psychological therapies, such as cognitive therapy emphasise the relationship between an individual's thoughts and beliefs and their emotional well-being. However, it is questionable to what extent individuals can change their beliefs while being repeatedly exposed to negative representations.
